Optima - Lenzner Strings

Lenzner E Strings

You have choice beetwen original Goldbrokat E (previously Lenzner) or the new Premium Steel, Brassed, and 24 Carat Gold E strings, giving you slightly different sound color:

- The original Goldbrokat plain steel Violin E formely produce by Lenzner is the choice of professionals for its brilliant, rich sound and projection.

Corelli Strings

Corelli Alliance Strings

Made in France by Savarez, producer of high-quality strings for tennis rackets, Corelli Alliance strings use a Kevlar core rather than perlon. The sound is warm and dark, although not as warm and dark as the Obligato, for example. These strings have a small but devoted following.
Corelli Crystal Strings

Corelli Crystal strings have a tone that is warm and dark, with a fair amount of edge that keeps them from sounding too dull. When you take them out of the package, you will find them very stiff compared to other strings. They also feel thick under the finger, although they really are not thicker than any other string.

Dogal Strings

Dogal Strings

Although Dogal has been making strings in Venice, Italy, for more than 50 years, they are not well known in this country in spite of their recent ad campaign. In fact, if you want to try them, be prepared for a long search (you can try contacting the company directly through the Web site www.dogalstrings.com) . When I first installed Dogal Synthetic Gut strings on my violin, I found them rather dull-sounding, with a sluggish response. After two days, they seemed to perk up. I would characterize the sound as slightly dark, with slower-than-average response. I think Dogal needs to improve the D string (silver winding instead of aluminum would help) because of the flat, sluggish sound.

D’Addario Strings

Goldenspiral Strings

Kaplan Golden Spiral and Golden Spiral Solo strings are made by D’Addario, one of America’s largest string makers. The sound is similar to Pirastro Gold. The solo version is more brilliant and can be found in different gauges.

Daddario Proarte Strings

D’Addario Pro Arte strings offer a sound that is fairly dark and smooth, making them a useful choice for bright, rough-sounding instruments. They are done to be less sensitive to humidity and temperature changes, and break in quickly.

Daddario Prelude Strings

D’Addario Prelude strings are manufactured using a solid steel core. Unaffected by temperature and humidity changes, they have excellent bow response. Prelude strings are affordable, with solid steel core string design. Prelude strings is a good choice for student strings with warm tone and good durability.

Daddario Helicore Strings

D’Addario Helicore strings have a multi-stranded steel core, good playability, producing a clear, warm tone. The smaller string diameter provides quick bow response. Excellent pitch stability and longevity.

Daddario Zyex Strings

D’Addario Zyex strings have a bright, focused quality and must be played for a few days before they reach optimum sound. Zyex synthetic core strings produce a warm, rich sound, a choice for bright sounding instruments

Pirastro Strings

Pirastro Chromcor Strings

The Pirastro Piranito string has good sound for low price. Good choise for small student instruments. Bright, clean, and clear sound.
Pirastro Flexocore Strings

Pirastro Flexocore strings have a warm, dark tone like the Helicore.
Pirastro Aricore Strings

Pirastro’ Aricorestrings was the first response to Thomastik-Infeld Dominant strings. This string has a dark, warm sound, but can be dead on some instruments. Available in medium gauge only.
Pirastro Synoxa Strings

In contrast to the Aricore, Pirastro Synoxa string is brilliant and focused. Available in medium gauge only.
Pirastro Tonica Strings

Pirastro Tonica strings are excellent strings with a bright sound. The sound is not as bright as that of the Dominant, but it has more complexity, fullness, and depth with may be a slower response. Two E strings are available with plain steel or aluminum wrapping. The wrapped E seems useful on violins having squeaking on open E.

Obligato Strings

Pirastro Obligato strings might are sounding like a gut-core string but more responsive and more brilliant. It might be a good choice for violin working well with Eudoxas, either for to bright instruments.

Violino Strings

Pirastro Violino strings have a core synthetic multifilament fibre. Warm, smooth and round sound with subtle differences of tone colors. Low string tension and excellent tuning stability, good playability and fast response, even with low bow pressure. Insensitive to variations in temperature and humidity. May be a little too quiet and mellow with not enought projection due to a lower tension, it can be a good alternative for too bright instruments.

Evah Pirazzi Strings

Pirastro Evah Pirazzi strings are silvery, powerful and colorful, more brilliant than the Obligato. Good playability, response and projection. Often soloists choise. These strings need few days to stabilize when new. Their high tension might not be suitable for some instruments and some people report to have great result at begining but lose some of their quality and have slower response after one month.

Evah Pirazzi Gold Strings

Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Gold strings have a warmer, fuller, more depth sound than the Evah Pirazzi. Very good respons and projection. Recommanded especially on viola. Some people report to have the same lose of quality as Evah Pirazzi strings after few weeks.

Pirastro Chorda Strings

Pirastro Chorda strings are made for early-music specialists with violins set up for Baroque performance. The E, A, and D are plain gut, and the G is wrapped with silver-plated copper wire. They are designed to be tuned to a 415 A. (A= 415 is one of many older—and lower—"standard" pitches. The lower pitch makes for a more mellow sound. Modern pitch in the U.S. is typically 440 hertz. In Europe the standard is sometime higher—445 or 450—which gives the orchestras a more aggressive, brilliant tone.)

Pirastro Eudoxa Strings

Pirastro Eudoxa strings were the standard string for many years. They have a dark, warm, and quite full sound. The response is rather slow, and they can sound dull on some newer instruments. Eudoxa strings work best on old violins, especially with a higher arching one.

Pirastro_Gold Strings

The Pirastro Gold is less expensive than Olivs or Eudoxas. Available in one gauge only. The E string Gold is one of the most popular E string and works well with other strings.

Pirastro Olive Strings

Pirastro Oliv strings are a reference for 40 years. Rich, brilliant sound with quick response for a gut-core, they are excellent strings. The E string is gold-plated steel with a beautiful, clear, and pure sound.

Tomastik Infeld

Wound on an advanced synthetic core, the Infeld string system is designed to cover the entire tonal spectrum, enabling players to achieve string-by-string tonal preferences without the headaches of uneven string-to-string tensions.
Infeld Red strings are designed to create a powerful, warm and expansive tone. These strings are excellent for soloists.

Dominants Strings

  Infeld Dominants

Widely regarded as “the reference standard” Dominant strings, made with a highly flexible, multi-strand synthetic core, provide the tonal warmth and feel of a gut string while being impervious to changes in humidity. The sound is soft, clear with a stable intonation and they are rich in overtones. One of the world’s most popular strings!
Thomastik-Infeld Dominants, the original synthetic-core strings, are still top sellers. The sound is brilliant and responsive, and these strings seem to work well with many different instruments. When they are first installed, they have a rather metallic and edgy sound that disappears with a few days of playing. The E strings don’t seem to match the quality of the other strings, and many players substitute a Pirastro Gold Label E, which is a good match.

When the Super-Sensitive Musical String Co. first introduced Sensicore strings , they had a nice, brilliant tone—slightly less bright than Dominants. More recently, they were reformulated and repackaged. They now have a darker, warmer sound somewhat like Pirastro Aricore. The strings fare better in the lower register, building a deep, warm tone and good volume. But the A and E strings tend to be more shrill.

About Strings

SYNTHETIC-CORE STRINGS

In the early 1970s, Thomastik-Infeld revolutionized violin-string making by introducing Dominant perlon-core strings. The claim was that now you could have a string that sounded like a gut-core string but didn’t have the disadvantages of pitch instability and slow response. These strings use a core of perlon (a type of nylon) wrapped with silver or aluminum. Within a day or two of installing the strings, they stretch out and stabilize. The core isn’t affected by changes in temperature and humidity nearly as much as gut, so these strings stay in tune much better. They also have a quicker response. Since the introduction of Dominant strings, other manufacturers have introduced many new synthetic-core strings using not only perlon, but also high-tech composites such as Kevlar. Each string has its own particular sound quality.

STEEL-CORE STRINGS

Steel strings began to appear in the late 19th century with the introduction of the steel E string (most E strings still employ steel in their creation). The A, D, and G strings use a core of fine strands of steel covered with a variety of metals, chrome steel, silver, tungsten, titanium, and others.

Steel-core strings have usually a bright and clear sound but with few overtones. Steel-core strings have the fastest response of any string. Most are higher in tension and thinner than other types of strings. The least expensive of them tend to be edgy, tinny, and a bit rough. The best are of a much higher quality.

With steel cores, there is very little expansion or contraction during temperature and humidity changes, and they tend to stay in tune better than synthetic-core strings. Might be a good choice for beginning students.

GUT-CORE STRINGS

Gut strings was the reference for classical musicians and prefered for their warm sound, and rich overtones. With a lower tension and slower response than synthetic core strings, it's still the choosen string for baroque musicians and instruments.

Their sensibility with temperature and humidity makes their pitch unstable making them having to be tuned frequently, especially after a first installation.
